Welcome to

Nuuk, Greenland

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland, balancing commerce and culture with fresh air and stunning views. Nuuk’s embrace of both the traditional and modern ways can be seen in the city’s dynamic cultural life and way of life. Nuuk has approximately 16,800 residents.

While Nuuk hosts a distinctly urban feel (despite its small population), nature is never far away. The iconic mountains of Quassussuaq/Lille Malene and Ukkusissat/Store Malene can be tackled on a hike just outside of downtown.

Nuuk means “the headland” in the Greenlandic language. The city lies on a large peninsula – hence the name – at the mouth of the vast fjord system “Nuup Kangerlua” (Nuuk Fjord). The fjord system is the second largest in the world and exploring it will leave you breathless. After departure from Nuuk Harbour, it doesn’t take long to reach the fjord system with its true wilderness of snow-capped mountains and barren islands.

Nuuk is also the oldest established city in Greenland. It was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede after he left his first settlement at the nearby “Island of Hope”. Hans Egede’s House still stands to this day, at the very same spot where he rebuilt it in Nuuk, in the idyllic area near the old town in the colonial harbour. The house is now used by the Government of Greenland to host special events and honored guests.
